Blog #8 - Zach Voigt

1.      Where can a technology that relies on heavy foot traffic be useful? What purposes can such a publicly visible idea serve, considering the fact the need for public education on environmental issues?
2.      What problems can the PaveGen solve by using recyclable materials?
3.      What are potential pros of adding PaveGen technology to less-developed areas, such as the provided example of Mumbai? What are the cons? What are the obstacles?

  1. I think the PaveGen technology is extremely cool because if we put them on like sidewalks where people walk constantly, we could gain a lot of electricity that way. Although this technology might cost a lot of money and would only work at urban areas where population is high, by using recyclable rubbers we are saving the environment and producing electricity in an efficient way. This can also educate more citizens and make them aware of the need to sustain the environment. By using recyclable materials to make the PaveGen rubbers, we can reduce the amount of waste that we are dumping into the environment. I think that the main issue with this technology is that it won't work well in rural areas or less developed areas like Mumbai. However, the long term cost effectiveness and savings from the PaveGen technology outweigh the cons. This can be a viable option to produce electricity instead of using an alternative energy source.

  2. If the PaveGen is effectively installed in many big cities across the world, I think that it could be very useful. Obviously avoiding areas with less people or where people don't walk would be key. However, concentrating them in tightly packed cities where thousands of people walk every day could do some good. I think that the visual aspect of it is good. It makes people feel as though they are doing some good. Even if they do not know exactly what they are doing, the light probably makes them want to step on it anyways. The PaveGen would be a good source for people to learn more about the environment and sustainable habits. Adding the Pavegen into developing areas could be effective because if installed in highly populated areas, it would eventually reduce energy costs which would lead to the area to develop faster due to more money.
