I believe that people are more inclined to favor economy over environment because in a time where the economy is rough and people are being layed off from work, people are more concerned with getting a job and making money then the condition of the environment. Additonally, I feel that in today's world, money is such a primary focus that people are willing to sacrifice the state of the environment in order to make money and improve their businesses. Personally, I feel that both the economy and the environment are both major priorities and equally important. I find the two to be very interdependent on each other. Our society needs a flourishing economy in order to progress and I feel that once the economy improves, the more effort we are able to direct towards the environment. Similarly, unless we have an environment that provides our world the materials and resources needed to grow and support businesses in our society, we will not have a flourishing economy.
Unfortunately it is true that most Americans do in fact favor the economy over environment. People as a whole are only interested in the short-term. An exhausted, dying economy would have a great and much more immediate effect on the people of today; however, the effcts of environmental decay most likely will not really be felt by currently living generations. As long as this viewpoint is held, the enviroment will continue to be harmed until it does become a problem: only then may it take priority over the economy.
It truly is difficult to say which is more important. If you want to make money and stimulate economics, you have to reduce production costs as much as possible which leads to environmental harm. In order to protect and restore the environment, companies have to put extra money into making their products "green". Because of this I would actually argue that in this day and age, the economy and environment are polar opposites of each other. America has tried to find a compromise between the two, but it really hasn't worked. In fact right now, environmental harm is still a huge problem as use of resources and pollution rates are out of control, yet at the same time, the economy is in shambles. It appears that this "balance" is completely failing which brings up a new question.
Is there a way for economics and environment to exist in a positive balanced relationship?
I think that the results are fair because they aer an accurate depiction the opinions of people in many different areas and with many different lifestyles. I do think though that the survey must be taken with a grain of salt. If this survey were to be given at another point in time, say when the economy is in a much better place, there might be more people who are wililng to put their focus on the environment. Contrastingly, a few years ago, when the economy was at its worst, I believe that people would feel overwhelmingly inclined to support efforts to help the economy and put environmental issues on the back burner.
I think that people are more inclined to consider the economy more important for a few reasons. Firstly, because changes in the economy are concrete and universal. When the economy is doing poorly, everyone sees it and understands its direct effects. Also, these effects are present immediately, whereas environmental effects are sometimes not present until much later. When the issue seems more relevant to the present, people are more likely to care about it. Lastly, I think that because there is already so much controversy over what environmental concerns are valid and what might not be, people are less likely to put time and effort into fixing it. When it is difficult to find proof, it is hard to get people motivated to work for change.
I am not sure which issue I believe is of more importance. I can understand both sides of the debate because the economic issues are so relevant to our country right now, but environmental issues can have an impact for the future. I believe that both issues deserve concern and I think that there is a way to divide the focus so that the efforts of one does not have to take away from the efforts of the other.
I feel that the results of this survey are pretty accurate, considering that they depict many opinions of various areas in the nation. They also offer three options, as opposed to only two sides. It's very true and obvious that in this day and age economy is favored over the environment. We live in a world where money can be represented as the most important thing in our lives. We constantly rely on it to survive, keep our families and homes stable, and to satisfy our daily needs. I also think part of the reason why people favor the economy is because catering to the environment seems like it has more a long-term effect, whereas the impact seems more immediate and relevant to us. I think that as people, we naturally leave it up to others to find ways to fix environmental issues as we continue with our daily routines, making us bystanders to the problems that we face in the environment.
I personally think that the environment is just as important as the economy. There has to be some middle ground. Because technically, if the majority of the world's population keeps overlooking environmental issues, then the economy will be the least of our problems. I think it's understandable that people view the economy as the most important thing since in these times we have reoccurring recessions and financial stability is fluctuating. But I think in order to reach environmental sustainability and to make this world last longer, the economy and the environment need to be taken into consideration equally.
In America, especially in the last couple years, people are definitely more inclined to say that the economy is more important because of the giant recession that has taken place. It is effecting everyone in some way and it has put extra pressure on everyone's wallet. It is not outrageous to say that this would cause people to be thinking only about the economy and how they are going to get by rather than outside issues that are not effecting them at this very moment, such as the environment. That being said, just because they can't be bothered with issues like this at this moment doesn't mean they are not overlooking the huge problem that we are also creating in our environment. It could potentially be extremely harmful if we continue to abuse the earths resources the way we are. Unfortunately this issue with the economy is taking over the majority of humans thoughts right now because if they can't find a way to put food on the table, there is no way that they would be able to contribute to saving our earth, let alone continuing on with their life. While I certainly believe that the environment will be much more important in the long run, theres not very much most people can do to help it at this point before they can proceed to get back on their feet after the economic collapse. They should still do the little things to conserve and "go green" every single day, but the main concern at this very moment for most americans is saving themselves economically.
I believe that the survey and results are fair. Unfortunately, people care more about what car and where they go to dinner than they do the air and the environment that we live in. That is just how it is. I understand that the economy over the last couple of years has been at some of the lowest points it has been in its existance. With that being said, people have always cared more about the economy than the environment. Just take Teddy Roosevelt for example, he was not very popular when he wanted to clear off land in the grand canyon to make it national property. People cared more about how much their house was worth on the local market than protecting what is now probably the most popular natural sight in the United States. I believe that people would just rather live in a nice house and drive nice cars than planting trees on the weekends and doing environmental stuff. The "popular" thing to do is to work as hard as you can until you make it big time. Thats how everyone looks at it. They dont judge themselves by how many trees they plant, but they judge themselves on what kind of car they drive, and how many square feet their house is. That is just life. Is it fair? probably not, but that is just how it is. People favor the economy more now as well, just because of the recession that we are in. While i do believe that people should be as careful as they can, and in the long run the environment is more important, i think that what people view is the economic status. I cant really pick which one i want more, a clean environment or live in a mansion, but there should be a balance on both. Unfortuantely, we live in a time where money is everything, so as of now the economy has to be more important and living a comfortable lifestyle is more important than a perfect environment.
What do you think about the president putting more emphasis on environment? Putting more tax dollars towards environment? Tax cuts for people who significantly help environment?
i believe that these surveys are fair due to the fact that they get the perspective of citizens of the United States in different areas and from various backgrounds. However it is logical to infer that the average American is more concerned about their next pay check then saving the environment. I think that people will for the most part value the economy over the environment due to that our society is run by money and sadly this is the main driving motivation in America. Overall the mind of a working member of society is focusing on what they need to do to provide for their families, and thus spawns the conflict between the economy and the environment. I believe that in our day and age we need to focus on preserving the environment we have now and keeping it safe for our future generations. A economy without the environmental resources we have now would cease to exist, and in so we as a global community need to come together to keep a balance in terms of the economy and the environment
